Consider this the “beginning of the end,” which introduces a thrilling, three-hole stretch runGreat Waters #16 along Lake Oconee that creates considerable anxiety. The straightaway play from the tee is squeezed by out of bounds on both sides of the fairway, which slopes toward the thicket of trees on the left. The lake reappears beyond the trees, stretching up the final third of the fairway, all the way around the green. Guarded by a bunker on each side, the long green has two ridges that create three tiers, with most of the green breaking toward the water.
Tip: “The 16th doesn’t have all the water of the 17th and 18th, but it can make you feel really uncomfortable,” says the Great Waters head professional. “You want to go for the right-center of the fairway and then just play the approach to the center of the green. And you don’t want to be thinking about 17 and 18, or you will walk off with a double-bogey.” He knows from experience: “Everyone talks about the last two holes, but the 16th just ruins me.”
